The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh provides assistance in performing body washing and shrouding, as well as the funeral prayer (Janazah) and burial in accordance with Islamic guidelines. When available, an imam will accompany the funeral bier to give a reminder upon burial.
The current funeral home of choice for ICP is John Elachko Funeral Home, and the current cemetery where the Muslim community has several plots reserved is Homewood Cemetery. Our funeral committee is headed by our current treasurer, brother AbdulHaq Jawula. The ICP also coordinates with other area masajid when necessary. If your loved one is near death or deceased, please contact the masjid directly, or Elachko Funeral Home (and they will contact us) for the next steps. As a general policy, ICP does not pay funeral and burial costs.
Finally, we remind the families and friends of the deceased that unless otherwise requested to be performed at the funeral home or the grave site, the janazah funeral prayer will, by default, be performed at the Islamic center prayer hall after noontime prayers. We require all our members and guests to dress appropriately when attending the center and especially when entering the prayer hall, even if that not joining us in the prayer itself.
